As a 64 year woman with a triple bypass and seven stents and a 67 year old man with arthritic joints we can attest to the value of the bike. Relocating from Massachusetts to Florida five years ago and not riding bicycles since our childhood, our children gave us bikes during our first year in the South. We try to ride every day and as of January, 2008 we have logged 18,500+ miles. During this time our health improved with our primary care physician saying, ‘Lady I don’t know what you’re doing, but keep doing it. Your heart performance has improved tremendously since your first visit to this office’. As for the arthritic condition it's been possible the last few years to sleep through the night without awakening and rolling over with hip pain.
So if health matters to you consider the following comparison between a ‘Fitness Center’ and ‘The Bike’;
Fitness Center
- Visit 2 hours /day; 4X/week = 8 hours
- 40 minutes R/T; 4X/week =1.5 hours travel
- .5 hour shower/change; 4X/week = 2 hours
Result
- 8 hours exercise = 3 ½ hours wasted
- Equipment is shared = risk of germs
- Overcrowding = breathing flu and cold germs
Ride the Bike
- Ready to roll = no wasted time
- Fresh air rain or shine = healthier environment
- No gas consumption = save money
- No Fitness Center fee = save money
- Ride 2 hours/day = easy on your joints
- Enjoy your own shower = healthier
Result
- Simpler to fit into your busy schedule
